It was a series of sci-fi books with the main 'hero' being James, who was like 9 or 10. He built a rocket in his backyard and flew to the moon. Other stories were a time machine, a submarine and going to mars and such.

What is the name of this series of books? It was children's sci-fi, around in the 60s or so?
Is it The Wonderful Flight to the Mushroom Planet by Eleanor Cameron? It's about boys who build a rocket ship, was published in the 1950s, and it looks like there were several sequels to it. There's a new edition of it available on Amazon.
