Is it Illegal to set up phone service in your child's name and if so How long will you go to jail?

My son's mother had a phone in his name and the account was sent to collections for $140 . My son is 7 years old. Does anyone know someone who has been caught doing this? What happened?

Reply:Pay the bill and get out of the problem. They give you the phone too. If your son is disable and you need this phone it could be account for right. Do not use him.

Reply:That would be identity theft, larceny by fraud and perhaps a few other charges. Its going to be very difficult for this child to get credit later in life. He's going to go through a million procedures just to clear that.....and I'd bet there are more things than just the phone in this poor kids name.
