Any ideas......He's a nice wolf.
I'm writing a children's story and need a good name for a wolf?
This always makes me laugh. This is YOUR creation - YOUR baby. YOU are the master of this universe.
And yet you want someone else to name the characters for you. I would never trust another person to name one of my books or any of my characters. I wouldn't even let someone else name my puppy! I wouldn't let anyone name my goldfish for me!
Let me explain how I name characters. www.behindthename.com is a great website. Not only can you choose names, but you learn the meanings as well. I like choosing names that suit the character's personality -- not just cute sounding.
For surnames, I use the US Census Bureau list of surnames from most common to least common (Smith, Jones, and so on.)
I keep both websites bookmarked for quick access.
I also keep two baby books on my reference shelf right at my right elbow. I love the Anne Geddes one with those gorgeous baby photos.
A lot of people use different methods. Some use the phone book. I know one author who likes to look through the names in the credits of movies. I know another who picks out parts of names from her childhood. Whatever works for you.
But I seriously believe that you are the one doing the writing and you are the one doing the character study and you should be the one naming them. This is your creation! Don't turn that over to strangers! This is a part of your character study and research. Choosing names for your characters.
By the way, I don't always get it right. I wrote a whole book once with one name for my lead female character that I thought was perfect. When I finished my rewrite, I realized I hated it. One click of find and replace and she had a new name. No big deal.
