A friend of mine remembers this book about a girl who picks strawberries for guests who stay at her family's inn located somewhere in the Alps. She read it in 4th grade in 1968 and doesn't remember much more than that...except that the story is not "Heidi." Any ideas?

This is a possibility, the book is called "Zel" and is by Donna Jo Napoli
There is another possibility I discounted, since your friend states that it took place in the Alps and this story, called "Strawberry Girl" is set in 1930's America.
"A story of a proud, poor family that overcomes nature and feuding neighbors to become strawberry farmers. Set in the early 1930s and told from the perspective of the daughter."
